Still Planning Your Retirement Like It’s 1995? Here’s a Smarter Way Forward

October 8, 2025 · 6 min read

The Power of Purpose Over Numbers

Financial planning often focuses on numbers — and sure, the math matters. But a truly successful retirement plan isn’t about how much you’ve saved; it’s about what you want your money to do for you.

Ask yourself:

  • What does my ideal day look like in retirement?

  • What gives me energy and joy?

  • Who do I want to spend more time with?

  • What kind of legacy do I want to leave behind?

Your answers will shape your spending patterns, your investment goals, and even where you decide to live.

For example, if your dream is to spend time near family, maybe you focus on reducing travel expenses and prioritizing home comfort. If your dream is to travel the world, maybe you allocate a “freedom fund” — a flexible account that supports spontaneous trips or experiences.

When your financial plan is built around your purpose, it becomes more meaningful and easier to stick to.
