Are Retirees Carrying the Tax Burden for America’s Richest?

September 30, 2025 · 7 min read

Marginal vs. Effective Tax Rates: Why Numbers Mislead

Politicians love to quote the top marginal tax rate — currently 37% for the wealthiest Americans. But here’s the catch: that’s not what most billionaires actually pay.

What matters is the effective tax rate — the average percentage someone pays after deductions, credits, loopholes, and clever planning.

  • In some years, billionaires like Warren Buffett or Jeff Bezos paid effective tax rates in the single digits.

  • For retirees, the effective rate can actually feel higher because there aren’t as many loopholes to play with. Social Security income, property taxes, and healthcare-related costs leave little wiggle room.

This isn’t about envy. It’s about fairness. Seniors feel the sting of every percentage point, while billionaires with entire teams of accountants barely feel it at all.

So while billionaires pay less than they should, retirees are facing costs that just keep piling up. Let’s talk about the hidden expenses that hit hardest.
