9. Cut Sponges in Half

This is one of those hacks that sounds ridiculous until you try it.
Sponges break down from the edges inward — which means when you cut them in half, each half lasts just as long as a full one.

You’ve basically doubled your pack’s lifespan without spending a cent.

American Pockets tip: You can also use mesh laundry bags to wash sponges and extend their life even further.

10. Repair Instead of Replace

Whether it’s a dog toy, a tote bag, or a pair of socks, learning one basic hand-sewing stitch can save you hundreds over time.

There’s pride in fixing something yourself — and once you start, it’s addictive.

Pro tip: Keep a “mini repair kit” at home — needle, thread, safety pin, small scissors. It’s self-reliance in a box.
