The Shocking Healthcare Divide Across States

September 25, 2025 · 7 min read

What You Can Do

Even though you can’t control state budgets, you can take steps to protect your own pocket:

  • Shop around for insurance plans during open enrollment to make sure you’re getting the best coverage for the cost in your state.

  • Use preventive care—checkups, screenings, and vaccines are often cheaper (and covered) compared to treating illness later.

  • Look for senior discounts and assistance programs—from prescription help to supplemental coverage, many programs exist at the state level.

  • Plan for retirement healthcare costs—factor in not just Medicare, but also supplemental insurance, long-term care, and state differences.

The Bottom Line

Healthcare spending in America isn’t equal. Whether you live in New York or Utah, the dollars spent on care look very different—and so do the costs to your pocket. Higher spending doesn’t always mean better care, and lower spending doesn’t always mean efficiency. For everyday Americans, the key is to understand the landscape, plan ahead, and make choices that protect both your health and your wallet.
