Of course, nothing comes without a trade-off. Experts say eliminating WEP and GPO will drain the Social Security trust fund about six months earlier than projected. It’s not catastrophic right away, but it does add pressure on Congress to address long-term solvency.

And that’s the tricky part—Social Security is one of the most popular programs in the country, but also one of the most politically sensitive. Everyone agrees it’s vital, but not everyone agrees on how to secure its future.

Still, for the people who got hit hardest by those old rules, 2025 feels like justice. Sometimes fairness now matters more than solvency decades from now.
